Kinney Drugs History Over 100 Years Of Service
Kinney Drugs has been around since your grandfather’s time. Since
Burt Orrin Kinney opened the very first Kinney Drugs store back in 1903,
our driving force has always been to care for our customers by providing
the highest quality, most convenient products and services.
Burt Orrin
Kinney was born in Gouverneur, New York in 1873. He attended local schools
and graduated from the Gouverneur Weslyan Seminary. He worked for a short
time at a local furniture factory and later became a drug store clerk.
At the suggestion of his employer, Mr. Kinney entered the Albany College
of Pharmacy. He graduated in 1901 and by 1903 felt prepared to go into
business for himself. That original Kinney Drugs store location is still
a vibrant part of today’s downtown business district in the heart
of Gouverneur, NY.
The post
World War II economy demanded the convenience, diversity, and abundant
parking offered by the new concept called the shopping center. Recognizing
a phenomenal opportunity for growth Kinney Drugs soon opened store stores
in these centers throughout the North Country and across the state border
in Vermont.
The Kinney Drugs Distribution Center was built in 1962 to service
this tremendous expansion, and continues to grow to meet the expanding
needs of the company. The latest addition to this facility was completed
in 1992, bringing the total size of the warehouse to 135,000 square feet.
From this "near you" facility, any Kinney Drugs store can be
served at short notice with almost anything customers may need.
Today's
Kinney Drug Chain has steadily grown in size, with constant growth in
the Central New York Market. The look of today's Kinney Drugs Store has
changed to keep up with the customers busy lifestyles. Convenient, stand
alone units offer shoppers easy access and parking, along with a wide
selection of products and departments to make shopping Kinney Drugs a
wonderful experience! The Kinney Drugs Pharmacy Drive Through Window service
also offers customers the added convenience of dropping off their prescriptions
when they're time pressed or not feeling well.
Over
a century of growth is quite an accomplishment. It would be impossible
to mention by name all the Kinney Drugs employees whose expertise and
skill made the company's growth possible. Needless to say, many long and
successful careers have been built with the Kinney Drugs, Inc. While many
things have changed over the course of the past century, one legacy lives
on – the Kinney Drugs commitment to old fashioned friendliness and
customer service which was inspired by Burt Orrin Kinney himself.
